FAC

Forward Air Controllers were used to locate and identify the enemy for passing attack aircraft. Both Ground and Airborne FACs were employed in Vietnam, with the latter flying low and slow over their targets, marking them with smoke grenades or rockets. If equipped with sufficient firepower, Airborne FACs could also destroy targets themselves. After an attack the FAC conducted a bomb damage assessment (BDA).
