Geneva Ceasefire

Signed by the commanders of the French Union Forces and Vietnamese People’s Army (Viet Minh) in July 1954, the Geneva Accords ended the first Indochina war and divided the country at the 17th parallel. The demarcation line was originally intended to last only 300 days before elections were held to reunify the country. However, as a non-signatory South Vietnam refused to hold the elections and the divide remained in place until the end of the Vietnam War.
