Comprised of indigenous soldiers led by a 21-man US contingent, the SMF was tasked with conducting in-country and cross-border crash site inspections, personnel recovery missions and intelligence gathering in support of prisoner recovery operations. On the disbandment of the SMF in March 1973, some US personnel were reassigned to the Joint Casualty Resolution Center in Nakhon Phanom, Thailand.
