Liquid DEET, or 'bug juice', was used as personal mosquito repellent throughout the Vietnam War. Despite the visibility risk, soldiers routinely carried the 2oz white plastic bottles in their helmet bands. This threat was addressed with the issuance of insect repellent in olive drab bottles late in the war.1
