The M8A1 scabbard featured a steel plated throat and could sheath either the M5, M6 or M7 bayonets. Early versions of the scabbard were issued with a leather leg tie for when it was worn on the belt, whilst later models featured a steel point cap and a nylon lace tie. The scabbard could also be attached to the M1956 intrenching tool cover or hung from the eyelets on the flap of the butt pack.
