Tested as a replacement for the
M1945 load carrying system, the experimental EX 54 webbing introduced the slide keeper attachment method that was employed by the production M1956 field gear. Though similar in appearance, the EX-54 shovel carrier had a number of features that were not carried over to the standard
M1956 version including:
- Two male snap fasteners on the bayonet securing strap so that it could accommodate two types of scabbard.
- A male snap fastener on the left side of the front was used to secure a strap that wrapped behind the cover from the right.
