The lightweight folding intrenching tool officially replaced the M1951 model when it was standardized in 1969 and had an aluminum handle and a steel blade. Unlike its' predecessor it did not have a pick blade, but the shovel did feature both a serrated cutting edge and a sharpened blade edge. The tool was carried on the pistol belt inside a specially designed nylon cover.
